90th birthday celebrations at Lye Library
Lye Library’s ninetieth birthday has been marked with a special birthday party that included stalls, displays, a cake, refreshments and balloons.
Around 160 people attended the celebration – including Deputy Lord Lieutenant Nick Venning, the new Mayor of Dudley Councillor Peter Lee, the town crier, invited guests, customers and current and former staff.
The event was organised by the Friends of Lye Library and speeches were given by John Chandler, one of their members, and David Hickman, from Stourbridge Historical Society.
Originally opened in 1935 by Sir Cedric Hardwicke, a famous actor of the time, Lye Library is run by not-for-profit social enterprise GLL on behalf of Dudley Council.
“It was a great 90th birthday party with much chatting and shared memories,” said Annette Templar, the library’s manager.
“The Friends of Lye Library group spent many hours planning, organising, fetching and carrying to make it the huge success it was, and my team and I can’t thank them enough.”
Amongst those displaying information on the day were local historians, Friends of Lye and Wollescote Cemetery, Friends of Wollescote Park and Friends of Lye Library.
