Artwork comes flooding in for Black Country challenge
Artists and photographers have been sharing their colourful creations as part of the Mayor of Dudley’s challenge to mark the Black Country Festival.
The Mayor of Dudley has set a challenge for artists and photographers to come up with a picture that captures the “spirit of the Black Country”.
It marks a month-long celebration of the region with Black Country Day which was celebrated on July 14.
More than 30 works of art have been submitted so far ranging from people, to industrial settings and key landmarks from across the region.
The winning entry will be framed and will hang in pride of place in the Mayor’s parlour later this year.
Councillor David Stanley, Mayor of Dudley, said:
The response in just a few days has been overwhelming. We really do have some talented people in the Black Country and I am delighted they have been showcasing their skills in this way.
There’s still time for people to submit their paintings or photography, but the closing date isn’t that far away so people need to get their entries in quickly. It will be a real honour to be able to hang it in the Mayor’s parlour as part of this year’s celebrations.
The challenge is part of a series of videos and images which are being shared online via the council’s social media channels to mark the special month, despite government restrictions to combat coronavirus.
Under normal circumstances, there would be events taking place across the borough. But this year, due to the restrictions caused by the pandemic, the council is urging people to do more online to mark the special month.
There is no criteria for entries but they must be submitted and available for display in the Council House.
The Mayor’s parlour is used for civic occasions, welcoming high-profile visitors to the borough, as well as community groups and charities. Hundreds of people will be able to view the winning picture.
