Award nominations for road safety team

Dudley Council’s road safety team has once again been shortlisted in the national Bikeability Awards.

The annual awards recognise the people and organisations encouraging children, young people and families to start cycling and switch to more sustainable transport methods.

Dudley Council’s road safety and travel awareness team has been shortlisted in the ‘Large Organisation of the Year’ category, while cycle trainer Kevin Payton has been shortlisted in the ‘Lifetime Achievement’ category.

The feedback for the wider team from participants of all ages, clients, parents, guardians and the education sector has been overwhelmingly positive. Kevin, who has been part of the team for the last 13 years, has a lifetime of club and competitive cycling behind him, as well as extensive coaching experience. Kevin is an extremely well-respected team member and Bikeability Instructor, asked for by name for training and advice, and in receipt of much exceptional feedback. He’s a stalwart of the team and supportive of every child.

Councillor Simon Phipps, cabinet member for economy and infrastructure, said:

“The team and its trainers continue to be recognised year on year for their contribution to teaching people this life skill.

“Whether it’s little ones on their first balance bikes, teens getting to grips with road safety, bike commuters learning how to navigate busy roads or people just returning to cycling after a long break and needing to increase their confidence, the team caters for everyone.

“I’m really pleased to see that they’ve been recognised once again and I’d like to congratulate Kevin in particular for his contribution to road safety education over the years.”

The team runs Bikeability training courses during school holidays, on weekends and at various events both as group or individual sessions. They can also be adapted to be inclusive to enable all where possible to take part. These include sessions for children and adults. From complete beginners through to those looking to gain confidence riding on the road.

The Bikeability Trust is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation with the vision to ensure everyone has the confidence to cycle and enjoy this skill for life. The Trust manages, develops and promotes the Bikeability programme on behalf of the Department for Transport.
