Be Bright, Be Seen winter 2020

With darker nights drawing in, pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and horse riders are being reminded to take extra care on the roads as part of the Be Bright be Seen campaign.

The project is part of the Department for Transport’s THINK! road safety campaign which aims to remind pedestrians, cyclists and other road users of how they can make themselves more visible when out and about as the nights draw in.

Tips on how individuals can keep safe during the darker evenings include wearing brightly coloured or fluorescent clothing that shows up well in daylight and at dusk; wearing reflective gear when it’s dark; using accessories, even small items like armbands and stickers; for cyclists to have clean and working lights at night as well as a rear reflector; using safer places to cross wherever possible, and using well-lit routes.

Councillor Karen Shakespeare, cabinet member for environmental, highways and street services, said:

We support the Be Bright Be Seen campaign every year, encouraging pedestrians, cyclists and other road users to take simple steps to help make themselves more visible on the roads as the dark winter nights begin to draw in.

Our road safety team does invaluable work with local schools and community groups, providing education and training to help keep people safe on the streets.

For the rest of us, sensible steps we can all take to stay safe include wearing light or reflective clothing and accessories and choosing well-lit routes.
