Boost your driving confidence with a free road safety course

Free road safety courses for anyone looking to feel more confident on the roads are being held in Dudley and across the Black Country in 2025.

The courses, which were initially aimed at over 60s are open to anyone who feels they need to brush up on their road safety theory skills.

Each session runs for three hours, from 10am to 1pm, with free parking and light refreshments included.  It's an interactive theory and Q&A session, there is no practical driving element.

There are speakers from National Highways who will be looking at smart motorways and what to do in an emergency. The Police will be talking about blue light awareness and what to do in an emergency as well as how to renew a driving licence. And the council’s road safety team will be talking about eyesight requirements including deteriorating eyesight and the importance of getting regular eye checks.

The sessions are informal but informative and give a good overview to those who feel they need to improve their confidence on the roads.

The first session will take place at The Dell Stadium in Brierley Hill on Wednesday January 15.

Courses will also take place at Walsall Arena and Arts Centre on Tuesday March 11, and at The Wheelhouse, Wolverhampton Cricket Club on Wednesday May 14.

Booking is essential and places will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

Councillor Damian Corfield, cabinet member for highways and environmental services, said:

“For many older people, a driving licence is an important symbol of independence.

“Along with our neighbouring Black Country authorities, West Midlands Police and National Highways, we want to help people retain that independence and mobility while remaining safe on the road.

“The course will provide information, advice and guidance to help those who want to drive safer for longer, and it will be very informal with the opportunity to ask questions.”
