Borough boxing coach hailed as “hero” for grassroots work

A Brierley Hill boxing coach has been hailed by the leader of Dudley Council for his tireless work in helping youngsters stay out of trouble and tackling mental health head-on.

It comes after Kevin Dillon was today named as a “Hometown Hero” by the organisers of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games for his contribution to grassroots sport in the borough.

The head coach of Lions Amateur Boxing Club was one of 14 named across the region today (Wed) from hundreds of nominations as “inspiring local champions of community sport”.

The campaign by Birmingham 2022 celebrates and recognises those that go above and beyond to develop sport, encourage participation and promote physical and mental wellbeing in their community.

Councillor Patrick Harley, leader of the council, said:

I was delighted to hear that Kevin had been recognised and I could not think of a more deserving recipient of such a title.
For nearly 20 years he has been active in the community working with hundreds of young people to give them a purpose in life and keep them off the streets.
More recently, he has set up a talking support group and a podcast specifically targeted at helping men to talk about any problems they may have and to open up about their mental health.
He gives so much to help others and asks for nothing in return. We need people like Kevin Dillon in our communities – he is a modern-day hero.
