Council outlines brownfield first commitment
Dudley Council’s ongoing commitment to build on brownfield sites first has been set out in response to a government planning consultation.
Authorities across the country have been asked to submit comments to a national consultation on the new National Policy Planning Framework.
The framework outlines the government’s proposals to meet new housing targets.
In response to the consultation, Dudley Council has raised concerns about the proposed increased housing targets for Dudley and stood firm on its commitment to build on brownfield sites first to meet housing and employment needs.
Members of the cabinet will be asked to endorse the council’s response to the consultation when it meets later this month on October 23.
Councillor Patrick Harley, leader of Dudley Council, said:
In a letter to the government in the summer, I raised concerns around the number of homes we could be expected to build in Dudley borough.
We haven’t got the land available to meet the suggested targets being put forward by the government.
This is why, in response to the consultation, we have once again reiterated our concerns that the proposed new build figures for Dudley are unrealistic and unachievable.
We have also reaffirmed our commitment to explore every opportunity to build on brownfield land first.
That commitment will be outlined in the Dudley local plan, which we continue to progress and will be going out for a further consultation later this week.
