Council praised for successful community share scheme

Dudley Council has been recognised by local charity Provision House for its outstanding efforts in collecting 16 tonnes of reusable items through its popular community share initiative.

The council hosts four of its ‘Too Good to Throw Away’ events each year, at locations across the borough.

The events encourage residents to donate items that can be repurposed and redistributed to those in need.

In 2024, more than 10 tonnes of donations were collected — including curtains, bedding, cushions, kitchenware, small electricals, clothing, food, and unused toiletries. So far in 2025, the scheme has already gathered an additional 6 tonnes.

All donated items are shared with charitable organisations across the borough, including Provision House, which repurposes them to support local individuals and families.

Dudley Council is now calling on residents to support the next event, which is taking place on Tuesday 28 October, 9.30am to 1.30pm at Carters Lane Baptist Church in Halesowen.

This event will focus on winter essentials, such as warm coats, blankets, and small electrical items. Other accepted donations include curtains and bedding, cushions and kitchenware, clothing, food, and unused toiletries

Furniture, soft furnishings, and white goods are not accepted, and a full list of accepted items is available online.

Councillor Andrea Goddard, Cabinet Member for Public Health, said:

“Passing items on to be repurposed is a fantastic way to reduce environmental impact.

“It also provides vital support to others in our community, which is why we run the
‘Too Good to Throw Away’ scheme.

“I’d like to thank everyone who has contributed so far and would encourage anyone with unwanted coats, winter blankets or small electrical items to join us at our next event on 28 October.”

Ruth Rackstraw from Provision House, added:

“We’re incredibly grateful to Dudley Council for organising these fantastic events, which give people the opportunity to donate items they no longer need.

“Repurposing helps reduce waste and provides essential items — such as clothing, curtains, and light furniture — to those who need them most.”
