Council secures extra £3.6 million to tackle potholes
Dudley Council has secured an extra £3.6 million in funding to tackle potholes and other road improvements across the borough.
The authority has secured £2 million through the government’s City Regional Sustainable Transport Settlement, and a further £1.6 million from West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA).
It means the council will now spend £16 million in 2025/26 on highway and street lighting improvement schemes.
Roads earmarked for resurfacing works in the coming months include Mucklow Hill and Huntingtree Road in Halesowen, Burton Road in Dudley and Wollescote Road in Stourbridge.
Highways teams have already completed works since April on roads including Duncan Edwards Way and King Street in Dudley; Cinder Bank in Netherton; and Holloway Street and Dibdale Street in Lower Gornal.
In addition daytime blitz works have been carried out on the Pedmore estate off the Queensway in Stourbridge, with works also currently going on in Addison Road, Brierley Hill.
The funding means ‘night time blitz’ works on potholes will continue while there will also be improvements to pathways, islands, traffic signals and signs and street lighting.
Councillor Simon Phipps, cabinet member for economy and infrastructure, said:
“The condition of our roads is the number one thing we receive complaints about as a council, so we know only too well how important it is for our residents.
“That’s why we changed how we repair our roads several years ago. Now we focus on high quality, longer lasting repairs that are guaranteed by our contractors for longer, delivering value for money for taxpayers.
“Despite the unprecedented financial position the council is in, we are still committing £16 million towards making improvements to our roads.
“That work will continue throughout the year, day and night, as we continue to do all we can to make it as easy as possible for our residents to get around the borough.”
