Council will shine light on Blue Monday
Dudley Council is set to light two of its buildings in green on Monday 18 January, to signify the importance of mental health.
Dudley Council House in Dudley town centre and Stourbridge Town Hall will be lit up on the day, which often known as ‘Blue Monday’.
The third Monday in January is thought to be the most depressing day of the year due to the gloomy weather, post-Christmas debt and money worries. The global pandemic and a third lockdown have placed further strain on people’s mental wellbeing and residents are being reassured that they are not alone as Dudley continues in the fight against Covid-19.
Green, which is the international colour for mental health awareness, is also often seen as the colour of optimism, new beginnings and hope. It is hoped the lighting of the buildings will raise awareness of the importance of our mental health, kindness and the varied free support that’s available in Dudley borough.
People from across the borough are also being invited to take part by wearing green clothing or a green ribbon, changing logos or social media channels to incorporate the green ribbon and sharing supportive mental health messages on social media.
Despite the pandemic and the stay at home directive people can also host virtual coffee mornings to check in on family, friends and colleagues and can send messages of hope by displaying a picture of a green ribbon in their windows.
Councillor Nicolas Barlow, cabinet member for health and wellbeing, said:
January can be a challenging month at the best of times but with the pandemic affecting all our lives many people are facing difficulties with their mental health.
This campaign is all about solidarity and support for one other, so I am asking everyone in Dudley borough to go green on January 18 and reach out to family, friends and colleagues.
I would also urge anyone struggling with their mental health to take a look at the many resources and services that could benefit them, no one should feel alone.
