Crematorium set to open after upgrade

Stourbridge Crematorium is to reopen in a few weeks following a £2million upgrade.

The facility in South Road has been closed since July while repairs and refurbishments are carried out.

It includes replacing two cremators with upgraded ones, as well as a small extension, a canopy and a new music system and TV screens.

The seating capacity in the chapel has also been increased by a third to 90.

Although the grounds have been open to mourners throughout the work, the upgraded complex will re-open in mid-December.

Councillor Ian Kettle, cabinet member responsible for crematoriums, said:
I’m pleased that we can re-open Stourbridge crematorium following these important upgrades. The work had to be done this year due to the age of the cremation facilities.
We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused during these difficult times. Cremations will continue at Gornal Wood until the site opens next month, and the work has not affected burials taking place in the cemetery at Stourbridge.
A number of repairs to the roof and facilities have also been made as well upgrades to the toilets, accessibility improvements for people with disabilities and new heating and air conditioning.

Current government legislation means up to 30 people can attend funerals. Measures have been put in place to encourage people to socially distance and follow all of the latest government guidelines.
