Delivery of new bins from January ahead of changes to waste service
New bins will be delivered to residents from January as Dudley Council introduces a new waste and recycling service in line with national government legislation.
Letters are being sent out to every household in the borough this week informing residents of the changes.
The deliveries start from January 5 and will include two new caddies specifically for food waste, with the council collecting them weekly from April 6.
Residents will get a 23-litre food waste caddy with a lockable handle and a smaller seven-litre one, along with an initial roll of liners for the smaller caddy. An instructional booklet will also be sent out with them asking residents to empty the food waste in the smaller kitchen caddy, along with the liner, into the larger outdoor container for the weekly collections.
Residents will also receive a 240-litre blue wheeled bin for recycling cans, plastic, glass and cartons. It replaces the current green recycling bags and black boxes, with households retaining the blue bags for paper and card. Green bags can be used for extra paper and card if required. Recycling collections will remain fortnightly.
Stickers on the new bins will remind residents that they are not to be used until the service starts from April 6.
The existing black bin is being retained for non-recyclable waste and will be collected fortnightly when the new service starts. Green bins will also be collected every two weeks for households that have subscribed to the service.
For residents who have communal waste and shared bins, collections will initially continue unchanged in April before the new service is rolled out at a date to be announced.
Councillor Damian Corfield, cabinet member for neighbourhoods, said:
“As a council we are fully committed to increasing the borough’s recycling rates and want to make things as simple as possible for our residents.
“From April 6 next year the council will be introducing a new waste and recycling service in line with the latest national government legislation.
“This states that all councils must simplify and expand their household recycling processes, which includes the introduction of mandatory food waste collections.
“Whilst the borough’s waste and recycling collections are changing, you will continue to receive a weekly collection through the new food waste service.
“The aim is to improve recycling rates, making household recycling simple, quick and easy.”
Residents will receive the new bins between January 5 and the end of March.
Details about collection dates will be available nearer to the start of the rollout.
