Dudley Grand Prix cycling celebrates special day
Dudley town centre welcomed some of the UK’s best road cyclists today with six thrilling races taking place for the Dudley Grand Prix.
Dudley Council worked in conjunction with event organiser British Cycling and the occasion formed part of the Black Country Day celebrations.
Visitors enjoyed food stalls, music and commentary as competitors battled for the top spot on the podium.
The day concluded with the men’s and women’s National Circuit Series competitions. Lucy Glover took top position in the very exciting women’s race while remarkable scenes saw Jim Brown stealing the lead in the men’s event.
The regional amateur race was taken by Simon Wyllie. Junior races and a community ride also featured.
Winners were presented with medals at podiums placed in Stone Street Square by Dudley Council dignitaries.
Councillor Patrick Harley, leader of Dudley Council, said:
Today’s races have put Dudley back into the cycling spotlight once again after the hugely popular Commonwealth Games cycling time trials came to our town centre last summer.
The Dudley Grand Prix event has been outstanding, and I would like to thank and congratulate everyone involved in making this sporting event such a huge success.
Councillor Andrea Goddard, Mayor of Dudley, said:
This incredible event was a great way to mark Black Country Day here in Dudley, the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution.
Despite the wet weather it was great to see so many people turn out to enjoy the spectacle of these races, both from within the region and from outside it.
The Black Country Day celebrations continue this weekend with Musicom bringing live entertainment to Himley Hall and Park on Saturday and Sunday.
Temporary road closures and parking restrictions were in place. Residents and businesses were notified in advance about restrictions and parking arrangements. Marshals were present throughout the route.
