Dudley marks 80th anniversary of VJ Day with two-minute silence
People gathered to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory over Japan (VJ) Day with a solemn two-minute silence at Dudley Council House today.
The commemoration honoured the end of the Second World War and paid tribute to the service and sacrifice of those who fought in the Far East.
The silence was observed at noon, with council staff and civic leaders united in remembrance.
Councillor Mushtaq Hussain, Deputy Mayor of Dudley, said:
“VJ Day is a poignant reminder of the courage and resilience shown by those who served in the Far East during the Second World War.
“As we mark 80 years since the end of the conflict, it is our duty to remember the sacrifices made and to honour the legacy of those who gave so much for our freedom.
“I would like to thank everyone in Dudley borough who took a moment to reflect and pay their respects today.”
In addition to the Council House observance, a special service has also taken place at Memorial Hall in Lower Gornal, organised by the Royal British Legion.
