Fire incident in Stourbridge

Councillor Ed Lawrence, cabinet member responsible for emergency planning, said:

“My heart goes out to everyone affected by the devastating fires and I would like to personally thank everyone in the emergency services for their incredible work in these very difficult circumstances.

“Local residents, charities, groups and businesses have been a huge support, and it is wonderful to see how our communities are pulling together at this difficult time.

“Yesterday around 300 residents were evacuated from their homes, and we are continuing to provide refuge for those affected, with support from local organisations. If anyone is concerned about a relative who was evacuated, and they are yet to hear from them, they can call us on 0300 555 2345.

“The fire remains a considerable risk to life and health and people in the area should remain at home with windows and doors closed unless instructed to evacuate. Many people have extended offers of donations and support, but at this time we have what is needed and we want people to stay away from the area so that the emergency services can focus on their work.

“We are asking people not to fly drones in the area, as the airspace is needed by the emergency services, and to strictly obey all road closures and barricades.

“I would like to remind people to not use disposable barbeques or have open fires. It’s also very important people ensure all cigarettes are extinguished and disposed of properly and please remember litter can cause fires so please take any rubbish home with you when out and about.”
