Get into Woodlands with The Prince’s Trust and Saltwells National Nature Reserve

Dudley Council has teamed up once again with The Prince’s Trust to deliver training for 18 to 30 year olds in woodland management and conservation.

The free training will use the new warden’s base at Saltwells National Nature Reserve.

This programme is free of charge to young people aged 18-30 not currently in full time work, training or education, living in the West Midlands able to travel to Saltwells National Nature Reserve in Dudley.

In the four-week programme young people will learn about the different aspects of woodlands maintenance and geoconservation and gain work experience and training at the Black Country Geopark's Saltwells Nature Reserve, one of the UK's largest urban nature reserves.

They’ll gain qualifications to help get a job in the green or forestry sector such as NPTC Chainsaw Maintenance and Cross Cutting and improve their teamwork and communication and boost confidence, interviews skills and CVs.

Those interested must have an initial assessment before attending Taster Day on Wednesday 2 November.

The programme runs from Monday 7 November to Friday 2 December from 8.30am – 3.30pm and students must attend every day of the programme.

Councillor Shaz Saleem, cabinet member for public realm, said:
This is the third time we’ve worked with the Prince’s Trust to deliver this programme and Saltwells is the perfect location for these young people to learn valuable new practical skills.
The programme gives young people the skills, confidence, experience and qualifications they need to start off this in this field of work and we’ve already seen how it delivers with the last two cohorts uncovering hidden geological features and planting more than 6000 trees.
