Mayor congratulates New Year honours recipients

Councillor Sue Greenaway welcomed three borough residents who were recognised in His Majesty the King’s first New Year Honours to the Council House in Dudley.

At the start of the year, Chris Jones from Stourbridge was awarded an MBE for services to sport and community in the West Midlands.

Chris was recognised for his instrumental role as Sandwell Council’s project director for the Sandwell Aquatics Centre. The centre was the only purpose-built venue for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

An MBE was also bestowed upon Barbara Beadman for services to the glass industry. Barbara has been a leading figure in this field for many years.

She served as director of Plowden & Thompson Ltd of Stourbridge and Tudor Crystal and has held several positions including founder honorary member of Glass Beadmakers UK and board member of the British Glass Manufacturers Confederation.

Lyn Head was awarded a BEM for services to the community. Lyn has been a long-serving director and volunteer at Dudley Canal and Caverns. 

The award recognised Lyn’s work to support a befriending group that meets on site as well as her commitment to events and activities, training volunteers and her work as the attraction’s director of enterprises.

Councillor Sue Greenaway, the Mayor of Dudley, said:

It was wonderful to meet with Chris, Barbara and Lyn this week to thank them for their services and to congratulate them on receiving their honours from His Majesty the King.

They have all made huge contributions within their field of work and I’m pleased these were recognised nationally.

We take great pride in the achievements of those who live in our borough, and I would urge people to nominate anyone they think could be deserving of a national honour in the future.
