Mayor of Dudley shares her story at International Women’s Day celebration
The Mayor of Dudley discussed her life as a woman in politics at an International Women’s Day event in Sedgley this afternoon.
Councillor Andrea Goddard visited Sedgley Evening Townswomen’s Guild (SETG) to share her experiences as a woman in local government, including the challenges of juggling her career with family life and her pride in representing the borough.
Dudley’s first citizen also talked about her decision to enter the world of politics after being inspired by her grandmother and her desire to make a difference in her community.
The Mayor joined more than 60 guildswomen and guests to take part in an International Women’s Day-themed quiz, share tea and cakes, and answer questions from the audience.
Councillor Andrea Goddard, the Mayor of Dudley, said:
I was honoured to address the Sedgley Evening Townswomen's Guild at today’s International Women’s Day event and talk about my career and experiences.
While I’ve faced challenges like any other woman in politics, I’ve learned not to let them deter me and I was proud to share that message of resilience and believing in yourself with the guild. I’ve also been lucky to have many strong women in my life, who’ve been a great source of inspiration and support.
The guildswomen really embody one of the most important things I talked about in my speech, the power of teamwork and togetherness, whether that’s teaching each other new skills or just being willing to listen.
Kerry Davies, chair of Sedgley Evening Townswomen’s Guild, said:
I’d like to thank the Mayor of Dudley for coming to our event and sharing her inspirational story as a young woman in politics.
It was great to bring together so many people to recognise International Women’s Day and celebrate just how far we’ve come.

Established in 1955, SETG brings together women across the town for meetings on the third Monday of each month at Sedgley Community Centre and activities like crafts, singing, walking, and day trips.
It is part of the wider Townswomen’s Guild network, which has its roots in the 19th century Suffragist movement and remains one of Britain’s leading women’s organisations.
More information on the Sedgley Evening Townswomen’s Guild is available on their website and Facebook page.
Celebrated every year on 8 March, International Women’s Day marks the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women and recognises the fight for women’s rights across the globe.
