Mayor presents historic postcards to Dudley Archives
The Mayor of Dudley presented three postcards featuring historic views of Dudley to the borough archives.
They include the Guest Hospital featuring the buildings, landscaped gardens and trees, Dudley Castle Courtyard complete with ruins, visitors and a courtyard donkey ride and Dudley Castle and Keep with flourishing vegetation and water filled moat.
They came from Margaret McManus whose grandparents moved from Dudley to Middlesborough around 1900, and who talked with fondness of the area and in particular Kate’s Hill. Margaret is now in her late 80s and rediscovered these in her house and thought they might be of interest to the Mayor and the people of Dudley.
Councillor Sue Greenaway, the Mayor of Dudley, said:
It was a lovely surprise to receive these postcards which offer a snapshot of the Dudley of more than 100 years or so ago. I’ve written to Margaret to thank her for her thoughtfulness.
You can still very much recognise these landmarks. There have been additional developments over the years but the beauty of these old buildings can still be seen today and they are still very much at the heart of their communities
The postcards are now part of the Dudley Archives collection. The archives are open Tuesday 10am to 5pm and Wednesday to Saturday 10am to 4pm.
