Mayor visits Brooke Robinson exhibition

The Mayor of Dudley has taken a first look at a temporary exhibition currently on display at the Dudley Archives.

The Dudley Council led facility is showcasing a selection of fine art works and artefacts from the Brooke Robinson Collection, usually housed at Himley Hall.

The collection, which is free view at the Archives for the remainder of March, features Roman pottery, Japanese pieces, and paintings by the Dudley-born Sir Thomas Phillips.

Brooke Robinson, who was a former Member of Parliament for Dudley, as well as a solicitor and County Coroner, was well known and high regarded in the local community until his death in 1911.

The Mayor of Dudley Councillor Hilary Bills said:

“Brooke Robinson left a huge legacy to benefit the town of Dudley, which helped to build a new Town Hall, Coroner's Court and council offices.

“Most notably, he left a fine collection of works of art, antiques and antiquities from round the world, which he collected throughout his lifetime.

“I am delighted to see some of his incredible pieces currently on display at Dudley Archives.”

The Brook Robinson Collection is a charity. A group of trustees work together with Dudley Council to promote access to the collection, currently based at Himley Hall.

Brendan Clifford, one of the charity’s trustees, said:

“We are delighted that Dudley Archives can offer space for a temporary exhibition of the Brooke Robinson Collection. It represents a part of the collection, and we hope it will be of interest to local people.

“We really appreciated the interest shown in the collection by the Mayor of Dudley, Councillor Hilary Bills, when she visited the Dudley Archives exhibition.”

People can find out more including opening times on the Archive’s webpage or by calling 01384 812770.
