Mayor visits Viking village

The Hrafnsaeti Viking Settlement Project at Brockswood Animal Sanctuary on the Gornal/Sedgley border is the result of nearly two years hard work by Hrafn Vaeringi, a local historical re-enactment group.

Modelled to reflect how Vikings would have lived around 860 AD, features include settler’s dwellings, a blacksmith’s forge and a pagan shrine.

Councillor David Stanley paid a visit to the site this week to see the work that has been done.

Councillor David Stanley, the Mayor of Dudley, said:

I was delighted to spend an afternoon at the new Viking village, and really learnt a lot from the group about the way Vikings used to live.

The group has incredible knowledge and this is going to be a real asset to our borough. You don’t need to read a book now to find out about the Vikings, you can go up here and actually see it on your doorstep.

The plan for the group is to use the settlement as a living example of Viking life for local school visits, which I am sure will be very beneficial.
