Mayor lights candle at Holocaust Memorial Day

Moving ceremony remembers victims of the Holocaust

People from across Dudley borough have attended a commemorative event at Dudley College today, marking the atrocities of the Holocaust.

The Mayor of Dudley, Councillor Hilary Bills, joined local faith leaders and community members to honour the memory of those who died.

Holocaust survivor Hedi Argent MBE spoke at the event, sharing her experiences and memories from the time, with those in attendance.

Hedi and her parents were forced to flee Vienna and move to England in 1938, after the Nazis took over her father’s law firm and the family’s home. Sadly 27 members of the extended family were killed during the Holocaust.

Councillor Hilary Bills, Mayor of Dudley, said:

“I would like to thank everyone involved in organising the ceremony as it gives us the chance to honour the memory of those who died or lost their loved ones in the Holocaust.

“It was deeply moving to hear Hedi speak today and I am honoured to attend this important event, which reminds us of the lessons that history provides and why we must never forget.”
