New protection order proposed for Dudley Town Centre

Dudley Council is inviting feedback on a proposed Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) which includes Dudley town centre.

The order is being proposed as a way of clamping down on a small number of individuals and groups who commit anti-social behaviour in the popular market town.

Feedback from residents, shoppers, visitors and businesses is particularly welcome, as part of the PSPO process the local authority needs to consult with people in the area.

If implemented, it will give the local authority and police enhanced powers to restrict unreasonable and disruptive behaviour over a period of three years.

People can take part in the survey online before 2 October at https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/PSPOconsultationDudley

Councillor Laura Taylor, cabinet member responsible for community safety, said:

We are regenerating our beautiful market town on a big and exciting scale and we know the fantastic potential Dudley offers with first class visitor attractions, shopping facilities, businesses and education centres.
Unfortunately, a small number of people seek to spoil our proud and historical town for the many who wish to enjoy it in a sensible and responsible manner, and we are here to tell them that their antisocial behaviours will not be tolerated.
I would urge anyone who lives, works, shops and visits Dudley town centre and surrounding area to take part in this survey.
The PSPO is designed to prohibit the consumption of alcohol and intoxicating substances. It would also help to stop groups and individuals causing nuisance, alarm, harassment or distress to others in the town and surrounding area urinating or defecating in public spaces and the dropping or discarding of litter in a public space.

Jason Anderson, Chief Superintendent at West Midlands Police, said:

The Dudley Neighbourhood Policing Unit support the implementation of the proposed PSPO.
It will help us to address a range of anti-social behaviours within Dudley town centre and surrounding area in a coordinated way.
The area where the town centre PSPO is bounded by and includes: Woodland Avenue, part of the public footpath leading to Castle Mill Woods, Gervase Drive, Broadway, Castle Hill, Birmingham Road, Wolverton Road, North Street, the Dudley Southern By-Pass, Martin Hill Street, Vicar Street, King Street, Queen’s Cross, Wellington Road, Stafford Street, Wolverhampton Street, Salop Street, Nath Place, The Broadway, Limes Road and Priory Road.
