Road safety sessions encourage green travel

Year six pupils in primary schools across the borough are taking part in road safety training sessions as they prepare for walking and cycling to secondary school.

Dudley Council’s road safety team is visiting Dudley borough primary schools to deliver the transition training sessions, which encourage children to take up walking and cycling to school.

The sessions have been put in place as the highest number of accidents involving child pedestrians occurs within the 11 to 12 age group.

It’s hoped they will prepare school pupils for travelling to secondary school independently, covering a range of topics such as pedestrian and driver distractions, stopping distances and safer places to cross.

The activity is also designed to boost the number of children choosing active travel to help reduce carbon emissions in the borough.,

Councillor Damian Corfield, cabinet member for highways and environment, said:

“It’s vital that we do all we can to help keep youngsters stay safe as they move from primary school up to secondary school.

“A good understanding of road safety is an important aspect of this transition, and I’m delighted that more than 97 per cent of the borough’s primary schools have now booked our sessions.

“I hope it will also encourage youngsters to walk or cycle to school whenever possible, as this has huge benefits to their own health and mental wellbeing as well as the environment and our commitment to reduce carbon emissions in Dudley borough.”
