Speed cameras go live
Speed cameras have gone live along two key routes in Dudley borough to boost safety for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.
The Average Speed Enforcement cameras went live this week along the A4123 Birmingham New Road and A458 Lye to Halesowen Route.
It is part of a major safety drive along roads in the Black Country with similar schemes going live in neighbouring boroughs.
The cameras will enforce speed limits, reduce accidents and clamp down on careless drivers and anti-social behaviour.
Across Dudley borough there were 457 road traffic collisions in 2019 with 77 people suffering serious injury and 5 people killed.
They will also help boost the West Midlands Combined Authority’s Road Safety Strategy to significantly reduce deaths and serious injuries from road accidents across the region.
Councillor Karen Shakespeare, cabinet member responsible for highways, said:
Anything we can do to boost safety for all roads users has to be a good thing. We have to do all we can to reduce the amount of deaths and collisions on our roads, tackling speeding drivers will be a major factor in that.
Motorists need to be aware, if they speed on borough roads it is highly likely they will be caught and prosecuted.
Across the Black Country in 2019 there were 1,955 road traffic collisions injuring 2,660 people; 363 people suffered serious injury and 24 people lost their lives.
