Street cleaning team hoping to sweep up national award

The award-winning team responsible for keeping Dudley’s streets clean has been nominated for another national accolade.

Dudley Council’s street cleansing team is up for a gong at the Annual Performance Awards 2021 hosted by the Association of Public Service Excellence (APSE).

The team is in the running to win the Best Service Team of the Year in the Street Cleansing and Streetscene Service (Public Realm) category.

And in a triple whammy for the authority, the council has been nominated in the Most Improved category for both its Highways, Winter Maintenance and Street Lighting service and its Waste Management & Recycling service.

The winners will be announced at an online awards ceremony due to take place on Tuesday June 8.

Councillor Karen Shakespeare, cabinet member elect for public realm, said:

I’m delighted to hear the street cleaning team has been nominated for another national award.
They do a great job in all weathers keeping our streets clean and it is testament to their hard work all year round.
It’s also fantastic to see the great strides we have made in other areas - including winter maintenance, street lighting and waste and recycling collection - has been recognised at a national level.
I wish them all the best of luck and hope they can bring another few trophies back to Dudley as winners once again, and in the meantime I know they will continue to be out on our streets hard at work.

If the street cleaning team is successful it will be the fourth time they have won the award, with previous victories at the APSE Awards in 2007, 2009 and 2010. They have been finalists every year since 2005.

The team also won a Keep Britain Tidy Award in 2016 and have been regular finalists since.
