Traditional tales for children as part of Black History month
Children across the borough can enjoy traditional African and Caribbean tales in an online storytelling session.
It is one of a number of activities Dudley Council has set up as part of Black History Month throughout October.
Barbadian storyteller Michelle Barrow has recorded the special stories from her home in the Caribbean.
Stories from the Drum is a selection of tales and have been shared on the council’s social media channels so children can settle down to listen at a time to suit them.
Michelle says storytelling can inspire the lives of adults, adolescents, and young children as she brings in songs, chants, and rhythms to bring her stories to life.
Michelle said:
Stories are such powerful ways to inspire people and I am delighted to be able to bring traditional African and Caribbean tales to new audiences as part of Black History Month.
I hope people like the stories I’m telling and draw on the history and the teachings that I try to get across.
The initiative has been organised by the council’s children’s services directorate.
Councillor Ruth Buttery, cabinet member for children’s services, said:
This is just one of a number of activities we have to mark Black History Month and I hope children will enjoy listening to the stories from a talented storyteller.
