Work progressing well on multi-million Dudley development

The latest phase of work in Dudley town centre’s multi-million pound new interchange - which also contributes towards delivery of the adjacent Portersfield development - has almost been completed.

Dudley Council’s contractors are close to completing highway works on behalf of Transport for West Midlands (TfWM). The work has widened St Joseph’s Street, off Trindle Road, so buses can safely access the new bus and tram interchange when it is built.

It comes as works continue to lay the line for the Metro extension, which will run from Wednesbury through Dudley town centre on to Merry Hill.

Council chiefs approved at a cabinet meeting yesterday (Thu) plans for the preparation of a business justification case. It will be used to unlock funding for further transport improvements around the Portersfield site through the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement (CRSTS).

Plans have been approved by cabinet for a new residential-led urban quarter on Portersfield, part of which used to be home to the long derelict Cavendish House before it was bulldozed in 2020.

The works close to completion in St Joseph Street and the proposed works in Trindle Road were all subject of a public consultation exercise in 2023 by the council.

Councillor Paul Bradley, deputy leader of the council, said:

“When I visited the site you can really see how the new Dudley interchange, Metro stop and Portersfield development are fitting together in a really cohesive way.

“It is a key gateway and our vision for Portersfield is to create a modern, vibrant residential development, bringing hundreds of new homes to breathe life into the town centre.

“What we are doing is laying the foundations in this area to ensure the transport links and infrastructure are in place. This will then facilitate with the delivery of the key regeneration opportunities proposed in the town centre.

“Along with the Metro and the new bus and tram interchange, it reaffirms our commitment to make Dudley town centre an attractive destination for people to work, live and visit.”
