Cabinet set to approve specialist support for young children with SEND
Young children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) will be able to access support closer to home under plans from Dudley Council.
The council's cabinet will discuss proposals to recommission five Early Years Inclusion Hubs, increasing the number of specialist places available across the borough from 48 to 60.
If agreed, the plans will help with a growing demand for specialist early years support, reduce waiting times for families and giving more children access to help during the crucial early years of development.
The Early Years Inclusion Hub model was introduced in 2023 to strengthen early identification and support to children with needs.
The council has since consulted with parents, carers, providers and hub staff on the proposals, which also look to increase capacity in the north of the borough. The hubs will continue to be delivered through maintained school providers and partners.
Councillor Wayne Little, cabinet member for children and young people, said:
"Every child deserves the best possible start, and for children with additional needs, accessing the right support at the right time can make a huge difference to their future.
"Our Early Years Inclusion Hubs provide safe, nurturing and inclusive environments where children can develop their skills, build confidence and receive specialist support that is tailored to their individual needs.
"By recommissioning the hubs and increasing the number of places available, we are helping more families access expert support closer to home, reducing waiting times and ensuring children get the help they need as early as possible.”
The council is also introducing a revised funding model designed to secure the long-term sustainability of the hubs, supporting providers to continue delivering high-quality specialist provision in the years ahead.
The investment will help ensure children with SEND can access early intervention and support within their local communities, improving outcomes for children while giving families greater confidence and support during their child's early years.
