foster care fortnight 2026

Dudley calls for 60 more foster carers as local heroes celebrated during Foster Care Fortnight

Dudley Council is calling for more local people to step forward as foster carers, as more than 500 children are currently in care across the borough.

The appeal comes during Foster Care Fortnight, as the council hosted a special Thank You Afternoon Tea to celebrate the dedication and life-changing work of foster carers in Dudley.

The event brought together foster carers, children’s services staff and local councillors to recognise the vital role carers play in providing safe, stable and nurturing homes for vulnerable children and young people.

Dudley currently has nearly 80 foster carers, but is urging at least 60 more people to come forward to help meet growing demand and ensure children can stay within their local communities, close to schools, friends and support networks.

Among those recognised was Dawn Campbell, who has been fostering in Dudley with her partner Mike for nearly 10 years.

She said:

“Fostering has been one of the most rewarding things we’ve ever done. It’s not always easy, but knowing you’ve helped a child feel safe, supported, and cared for makes it all worthwhile. Seeing young people grow in confidence and knowing you’ve played a part in that journey is incredibly special. We would encourage anyone thinking about fostering to take that first step - you really can change a child’s life.”

Councillor Wayne Little, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services & Education, said:

“Our foster carers do an absolutely amazing job, and this event was a small way of saying thank you for everything they do. They make a real and lasting difference to children’s lives every single day. However, with more than 500 children in care in Dudley, we urgently need more people to come forward and join our fostering community.”

The council is encouraging people from all backgrounds to consider fostering. You do not need to own your home or be in a traditional family set-up, and full training, financial support and ongoing guidance are provided.

Fostering in Dudley offers 24-hour support, 365 days a year. To find out more and start your fostering journey, visit www.fosteringindudley.org.uk or call 01384 815833.
