Eton officially coming to Dudley
Eton is officially coming to Dudley, prompting council leaders to hail the move as a “landmark agreement” for the borough.
The Department for Education has announced its approval for a new free sixth form college in Dudley.
Eton Star Dudley will recruit high-achieving young people from deprived communities in the town and surrounding areas and provide them with a rigorous and rounded education and support them to achieve places at the very best universities.
It will complement the £1billion worth of regeneration activity well under way in the borough.
Dudley Council leaders hailed the news today as a “bright new future” for young people and is continuing to work with Eton on the plans.
Councillor Patrick Harley, leader of Dudley Council, said:
We are delighted with this landmark agreement, which is a significant step forward to bringing Eton to Dudley.
Eton epitomises the very best standards in learning and they very much share our vision of a nationally renowned education facility in the borough. We will continue to hold positive discussions with Eton to pave the way for this to happen.
With the Midland Metro, very light rail innovation and now an internationally renowned education provider, there is a bright new future for the people of this borough.
Councillor Ruth Buttery, cabinet member for children’s services, added:
We already boast a wide range of options for young people to flourish in education in Dudley borough and this will only build on that incredible offer.
I really am looking forward to seeing young people fulfill every inch of their potential here in Dudley.
Students who attend will benefit from an education based on the best that is on offer at Eton and the best of high-performing Star Academies.
The council will be working with Eton and Star Academies over the coming months to finalise commercial details.
